Founder of Firewalking Celebrates Birthday Tolly
by Chucky Pizzo

Nestled in the tiny hamlet of Twain Harte, near Sonora, California, Tolly Burkan prefers the simple life. He lives in a self-described tree house in the mountains, a pastoral setting amid nature and a collection of beloved drums and rattles. Some he makes and others he has collected. His cat, Salt, approves of this Zen-like existence.

It's the perfect retreat for the founder of the firewalking movement who retired at the end of 2008. On May 17, Tolly turned 61 and was feted by loved ones and friends.

Master Instructor Charles Horton was on hand for the event. "Tolly has always been sort of a hermit-hippy-in-the-woods type," he reflected. "It's great to see him healthy, happy and relaxed - as usual." The group toured the area for several days, visited wineries and hiked around Pinecrest Lake.

On one of those six-mile jaunts, which Horton said was "as powerful as any empowerment intensive," he and Tolly shared stories about seminars, firewalking events, and the nature of surprise. "I was always looking for new ways to teach," Charles recalls Tolly telling him. "It's always been about getting participants out of their comfort zones so they can experience breakthroughs."

The two sat on a bench discussing techniques used in various classes by different instructors. According to them, some things are best left unsaid. If every detail of the training is exposed in advance, some people will become fearful - the exact opposite of the desired outcome. The element of surprise is believed to force people to confront their fears in real time.

"Once they bond with the group," Horton explains, "people do all of the metaphorical exercises." Activities are always optional, without pressure. One imagines that people let down their guard and succumb to new experiences in their quest for personal growth. "Then, they feel exhilarated and renewed," he adds.

As Tolly and Charles talked about these rites of passage, the idea for a new empowerment intensive came into focus. Many people who attend the FIT, or firewalking intensive training, do so for personal growth and not specifically to become a teacher. "There's an opportunity for us to develop a modified program that will help people develop a vision for success while also empowering them," Charles reports after meeting with Tolly.

Tucked away in the High Sierras, the group continued its hike around the lake's deep granite basin surrounded by tall trees, soaring birds, and vibrant sunshine. Later, a chef prepared a sumptuous feast in celebration of Tolly. Laughter and joy filled the air.

 New
Burning mad! That's the reaction many of us have to the economic downturn, the meltdown in the financial sector, and the ensuing loss of jobs that have affected so many people's lives. The sudden shift has left many reeling - or worse, unprepared.

"My Dad told me about people in their sixties who had planned for retirement, only to find themselves financially unprepared due to the economy," said Charles Horton, master instructor and general manager of the Firewalking Institute of Research and Education (F.I.R.E.). "Portfolios sank. Fortunes evaporated when Bernie Madoff's Ponzi scheme collapsed. People lost homes to foreclosure. It's been a tough year."

Survival of the Fittest

According to Horton, when circumstances change, you have to be strong-minded so you can face the problem head on. Inaction is not a solution. "From time to time, all of us have to rethink our path in life," he says. "You must re-prioritize and take action."

Strength comes from being mentally fit enough to take the steps necessary to ensure long term survival. You must intend to succeed so that you can rebound and even excel in the worst of times. "You thought you were set in life, but it turns out you're not. It happens. What do you do then? That's what we will teach you," he adds.

The Birth of a New Seminar

The traditional empowerment intensive, or FIT, teaches people to become teachers. Rites of Passage is focused on personal, career and financial development.

"Participants will develop a vision for their whole life. That tool will help them set goals and a plan of action to attain them," Horton explains. "Sitting on goals - dreaming - will not make them come true. Rites of Passage gives people the skills and motivation necessary to take action. We will fire you up!"

A personality assessment will help people identify and acknowledge things they must work on to succeed. Wealth-building strategies will be covered in great detail - including saving, investing, and the mindset of abundance. The "Law of Attraction" from the The Secret will be explained in-depth so participants can learn how to apply it.

The seminar will also contain metaphorical activities that help participants conquer fear, including board and brick breaking, walking on broken glass, snapping arrows with the throat, and an optional firewalk.

Mentored By Millionaires

A self-made multimillionaire, Horton will personally mentor the group. As of young man of ordinary means and education, Horton himself was transformed by a strong mentor. Now, the one-time martial arts student gives back by teaching others. He has recruited other millionaires and entrepreneurs to share their stories and pass on the knowledge that there are many different routes on the road to abundance.

Who is a candidate for this seminar? Anyone really.

·      Your job or career options have changed
·      Your financial portfolio is not performing to plan
·      The floor just fell out of your retirement savings
·      Young people ages 18-25 seeking independence
·      People taking charge of their financial future
·      Those interested in success and wealth building

Look for details on the new seminar, Rite of Passage, forthcoming soon.
Choose Without Regret Judith Cassis
By Judith Cassis, C.Ht.

Every moment is rich with opportunity to direct our lives.  Choices are made, and action is taken.  There are choices, like what you're going to eat, or whether to check email.  There are also choices; referring to decisions that overtly affect the course of your life - such as where to live, whom to marry (or not), and what to do with your life.

Some choices come equipped with plenty of lead time, and other times a choice must be made in a matter of seconds.  Choices can be trite, or a matter of life and death. Your life's circumstances will prompt you to make choices that, in other situations, you'd never make.

Just ask someone who's been both rich and poor.  That same person is motivated differently in both scenarios. What they eat, how they live, and even who they affiliate with are determined by their economic condition.  A person who is financially stressed will make food choices they would never make if circumstances were the other way around.

Sometimes it's hard to know which way to turn, especially when a situation seems confusing.

As a firewalk instructor, over the years, I've learned that confusion is in the head.  Answers are found in the heart.  So when you feel confused, take a deep breath and allow your focus to drop into your heart.

This concept itself might sound confusing.  That may be because you're trying to wrap your head around it. Stop thinking, and feel your way through it.  You'll find the answer in your heart.

It may take a little practice, but eventually you'll learn to recognize when you're in your head (hint: confusion). When you realize it, allow yourself to move into your heart.  Choice-making will be very different, I promise.

Whether we're talking about choices or choices, once you have chosen, move on.  If you discover that your choice wasn't the best, you may have the opportunity to go back and reverse the outcome.

There may also be times when choice-making cannot be undone.  In either case, resist second guessing - and for heaven's sake don't berate yourself!  We all do the best we can with what we have to work with at the time.  Allow the same level of compassion for yourself as you would have for someone else.

When you choose, do so without regret.  If it doesn't work out, just make a different choice.  Always move forward - looking back does no good.  Sure, you can learn from mistakes, but dwelling on the past only results in pain.

I wouldn't ask you to choose without regret without also handling the other side of the coin.

When you're on the receiving end of someone's less-than-perfect choice, forgive!  It does no good to persecute someone for their choices.  It doesn't change the fact that the choice was made.  It's over.  Done.  Let it go and move on.

If you've made choices that resulted in circumstances you'd prefer to avoid, choose again.  Keep choosing.  Remember that outer circumstances don't dictate inner happiness.  Get out of your head!  Happiness is found in the heart.

EFIT - A Journey Never to be Forgotten
by Joan Frances Boyle

What a fantastic journey! It seems unbelievable that I spent only nine daysJoan Frasis attending the EFIT (executive firewalking intensive certification) in Dallas, Texas, with Charles Horton and the team. There was so much packed into each day that it seemed much longer.

The EFIT was a totally inspiring and transformational experience. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment and found the seminar content highly informative. The intense fire-tending training surpassed all expectations  - and I found the life metaphors skills most exhilarating.

I have more than one highlight - no in fact, I loved it all - but the 108-firewalk was just incredible (Ed.: a certification exercise in which firewalkers cross a bed of hot coals 108 times in a row). I will never forget it as long as I live, and will talk about it for years to come! Thank you.

The trust fall was the most terrifying moment throughout the nine days for me (Ed.: an exercise in which a participant falls backward from a height into the arms of fellow classmates). As revealed to the group afterwards, I had fallen and fractured my spine three years ago and was involved in a traffic accident two years ago - both of which left me in constant back pain.  As a result, I've been avoiding any activity that seemed threatening to my spine.

The trust fall was the moment of truth: would I play full out or not? I am glad to report that the answer is yes. With the encouragement of the group, I allowed myself to play full out and let go of the fear I had locked inside me. Amazingly, I have been reaping the benefits ever since - no pain in my back!

This was truly a journey never to be forgotten, providing daily opportunities to grow in a beautiful environment filled with like-minded people, motivational trainers and world-class speakers. The whole experience has infused me with a renewed determination to succeed in my life goals.

Thank you to the Firewalking Institute of Research and Education (F.I.R.E.) for opening its beautiful facility to us and for the dedication, wisdom and loyalty shown to your EFIT candidates.

May a thousand blessings be bestowed upon all: love, light and Reiki.
Firewalking Benefits Raise Money,
Lift Spirits of Aaron Stanley

by Chucky Pizzo

Aaron StanleyHe loved to run on the beach with his dogs. His career goal was set: to become a contractor of green buildings. He is a man of faith and hope. Now, he needs your help. Aaron Stanley fell 25 feet while working as a carpenter and sustained injuries resulting in paralysis. As we all know, medical and rehabilitation expenses mount quickly.

The part of this story you may not know is that Mr. Stanley is the son of the two people often credited as the mother and father of the modern firewalking movement: Peggy Dylan and Tolly Burkan - to whom this community owes much.

The Firewalking Institute of Research and Education (F.I.R.E.) Saraof Texas responded by organizing a benefit firewalk in Aaron's honor on May 20. Eighteen generous souls participated, as did two television stations and a news-reporting Web site.

According to Charles Horton, Aaron was moved to learn that people care about him. "He  is grateful and feels the love," reports Charles. "It eases his pain - both financially and emotionally - to know that firewalking instructors will do this on his behalf. "

One person who turned out for the cause was Sarah Treanor, age 26. Though she had never firewalked until the night of the benefit, she crossed the coals first. "Afterwards, when the group joined hands, I began to understand the strength inside all of us. Suddenly, I realized what we are all capable of," said Sarah. "As a group, we'd each purged a piece of something inside us that has been limiting us all of our lives."

Television coverage of a past firewalk attracted Veronica Valdez to learn more. "I feel so much joy, and I'm a very happy and blessed person since firewalking," she said. "It has helped me to grow and face my fears... as a result, I've recaptured my dreams!"

Help us help Aaron realize his dreams.
